Alcorn State Jazz Festival postponed after star artist withdrew – The Vicksburg Post

The last day of the annual Alcorn State Jazz Festival has been postponed.

The event, which was scheduled for Saturday, was canceled when band star musical act Cassandra Wilson pulled out at the last minute, event director Dr David Miller said on Thursday. He said the school hoped to reschedule the event in early February.

“This thing (the last day) has been so elusive. It’s like the fourth time we’ve had to postpone this thing, ”Miller said. “We were looking for a date in November, but they said they couldn’t form a group for it. I guess what’s going on is that not all musicians have worked so long that they’ll take any job they can get whenever it’s offered to them.

“We are disappointed with the cancellation, but in the current climate we fully understand how things are going and we look forward to Alcorn State rescheduling the jazz festival,” said Erin Southard, Executive Director of the Convention Center. “It’s such a wonderful event that we look forward to every year and can’t wait to see it again.”

The Saturday program at the Vicksburg Convention Center was to wrap up the 40th Alcorn Jazz Festival and feature performances by college and high school groups from the Southeast and Mississippi jazz educators, as well as a workshop and performance by the band Cassandra. Wilson.

But Miller said the star performers told him they weren’t able to have a full band, “after they told me for months and months that they were fine, but at at the last minute they told me they couldn’t get the group together. “

He said the school was looking for a weekend in early February for the final event.

“It’s probably as late as possible because we’re starting to get closer to the (41st) festival in April,” Miller said. “We are still planning to get on the right track and have a regular full festival in April.”

Launched in 1981, the Alcorn State Jazz Festival took place every spring and has hosted music stars such as Maynard Ferguson, the Ramsey Lewis Trio, The New Orleans Jazz All Stars and Branford Marsalis.

The 2020 festival was canceled over COVID-19 concerns and resumed in April with a split schedule.

The first day of the festival in April took place at the Alcorn campus in Lorman and moved the next day to Vicksburg, where a jazz concert was held at the Vicksburg hotel. The festival was to resume this Saturday until canceled.
