Arts Beat: Sevenars announce summer classical and jazz concerts
Tony and Chita in the Berkshires! Broadway award-winning singer-dancer Tony Yazbeck, Tony nominee for “On the Town” (who was born on Barrington Stage), and Chita Rivera, a Broadway legend, will appear at the Berkshire Theater Group’s Colonial Theater on 28 and May 29, respectively. . “Cabaret,” Kander and Ebb’s landmark musical, whose stunning film adaptation by Bob Fosse opened 50 years ago, returns to the stage as the opening musical of Goodspeed’s summer season, May 13-3 July. “Cabaret” will be directed by James Vásquez, with choreography by Lainie Sakakura, who will re-enact some of Bob Fosse’s dances from the film. “Cabaret” opened on Broadway in 1966, starring Lotte Lenya, Jill Haworth and Joel Gray (who starred alongside Liza Minnelli in the film). “Cabaret” has been revived twice on Broadway with Alan Cumming, in a version that combines elements from the original musical and the film. A London revival swept the Olivier Awards recently. The emcee will be played by Jelani Remy, who was recently seen on Broadway as Eddie Kendricks in “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations.” Sally Bowles will be played by Aline Mayagoitia, whose Off-Broadway credits include “Notes from Now” and “Forbidden Broadway: The Next Generation.” For more details: www.goodspeed.org.
