Detroit Jazz Festival announces lineup for Labor Day weekend event

On International Jazz Day, at a preview event that included a concert by festival artist-in-residence Chucho Valdés, the Detroit Jazz Festival announced what it called a partial lineup for the four-day event held in downtown Detroit over Labor Day weekend. As partial as it is, it includes more than two dozen notable artists, including headliners such as Valdés, Dianne Reeves, Artemis, Cécile McLorin Salvant, John Scofield and many other household names in the jazz world. The festival, which claims to be the world’s largest free jazz festival, is sponsored by Rocket Mortgage and will take place in person for the first time since 2019. In 2020 and 2023, the festival aired performances from the local Renaissance Hotel in it looked a lot like a jazz telethon. (Read Lee Mergner’s report on the 2019 edition here.)
