What you need to know: The Montclair Jazz Festival Downtown Jamboree this Saturday!

Tomorrow is the big day and the weather promises to be magnificent for the Grand Final of the MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL Downtown Jamboree! Get some sleep tonight as there’s a full day of events, three stages featuring internationally acclaimed headliners, regional favorites and emerging talent, over 150 artisan food and craft vendors , an extended all-day family jazz discovery zone for families – and at the very end – an after party!

Presented by BDP Holdings, LLC and produced by Jazz House Kids, the Montclair Jazz Festival is the largest FREE jazz festival in the greater New York area, drawing 35,000 jazz fans to downtown Montclair with festivities s extending nearly half a mile up Bloomfield Avenue from Lackawanna Plaza. in South Park, turning Montclair’s main avenue into an all-pedestrian jazz playground.

Matthew Whitaker

With three stages in Montclair’s nearly half-mile jazz playground, the challenge is how many artists can you enjoy during the eight hours of live music. Be sure not to miss Matthew Whitaker as he kicks off the festival at 1 p.m. at Fullerton Stage. This incredible musician and composer started with Jazz House Kids when he was 7 years old. Whitaker has toured here in the United States and abroad, performing at United Nations Headquarters and other world-renowned stages, including The Apollo Theatre; Carnegie Hall; Jazz at Lincoln Center; SFJAZZ; The Kennedy Center; Monterey Jazz Festival; and in locations all over Europe and Asia. Danielle Ponder

The festival is closed by the powerful American soul singer Danielle Ponder. In 2020, NPR described her music as anthem while being compassionate; moving, yet bold and strong. At the 2021 Newport Jazz Festival, her performance was hailed as one of the standout performances of the event. Ponder continues to advocate for criminal justice reform and was an influential leader of the Black Lives Matter movement in Rochester, NY. In between, there are over a dozen other artists you’ll want to hear, including Jazz House Collective Celebrate Mingus, Nathan Farrell Quartet, The Cookers, Monty Alexander – Harlem Kingston Express, Artemis and many more. You definitely don’t want to miss Christian McBride, artistic director of the Montclair Jazz Festival and eight-time GRAMMY Award-winning bassist/composer, at 6 p.m. He has a surprise group coming to join him and you know he will bring it.

After Party at the Wellmont Theater | 21:00 – 00:00

At 9:00 p.m., after the final bow of the festival artists, the After Party with the DJ Logic record player is just beginning at the Wellmont Theater. As one of the world’s most accomplished turntables, DJ Logic is widely credited with introducing jazz to the realms of hip-hop and is considered by most to be a highly respected session musician and innovative bandleader. . Tickets are available at the festival’s Wellmont tent or at Ticketmaster ($19.95 to benefit the children of JAZZ HOUSE.)

There will be street closures so you can enjoy live music and walk safely on Bloomfield Avenue. Plan to cycle or walk!
