WINONA LAKE – The 2022 Winona Lake Jazz Festival will feature Thana Alexa – a Grammy and Downbeat nominated cover artist, singer, songwriter, arranger and producer.
The festival will take place from 1 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 23 at the Winona Heritage Hall, 901 Park Ave., Winona Lake. Part of the Grace College and Village at Winona Festival of Music, the event is free.
“The jazz festival is a community favorite every summer. This year we’re really going to have a blast,” said festival coordinator Wally Brath. “We are thrilled to welcome the incomparable Thana Alexa to Winona Lake for the first time. Thana’s voice is both lyrical and experimental, and her music pushes the boundaries of the genre into new and uncharted territory.
Alexa’s work has deep roots in jazz and overtones of contemporary soul and world music. The group features her husband, a multi-Grammy award-winning drummer, Antonio Sánchez.
The concert also hosts several other bands. The full concert schedule is as follows:
- 1:00 p.m. Truth in Jazz Big Band
- 2:30 p.m. Quintet Brath/Tardy
- 4 p.m. John Moulder Quintet;
- 5:30 p.m. Thana Alexa and Ona.
Truth in Jazz Big Band will return to Grace as it celebrates its 22nd anniversary. The band brings together local professional musicians who share a deep love for jazz and wish to share the style of big band jazz throughout Michiana.
After Truth in Jazz Big Band is the Brath/Tardy Quintet. Wally Brath, worship arts professor at Grace College, will team up with tenor saxophonist/clarinetist extraordinaire Greg Tardy to bring original, classic standards to life. After that, the John Moulder Quintet will take the stage, combining many different musical currents in a beautiful mix of modern jazz.
